CONTROVERSY! Bigger Than Jesus at IdeaCity in Toronto
Bigger Than Jesus, Rick Miller and Daniel Brooks' internationally-acclaimed hit play, was one of the highlights at Toronto's IdeaCity09. But fellow presenter Ronald Weinland (author and self-proclaimed Prophet of God) begs to differ... For some incendiary rhetoric, read on!!!
On June 17th 2009, Rick Miller performed a 20-minute low-tech excerpt of Bigger Than Jesus at the 10th anniversary of IdeaCity, Moses Znaimer's festival of 'Big Ideas' (watch the edited version). The performance received a rousing standing ovation, and was universally regarded as one of the high points of the 3-day gathering. Well, not quite 'universally'...
One of other presenters grouped under the 'spirituality' theme was none other than Ronald Weinland, self-proclaimed "Prophet of God", founder of "God's Church", and author of "2008—God’s Final Witness", a book proclaiming the end of time in May 2012. Mr. Weinland was so disturbed by Rick's performance that he felt inspired to write Moses a letter and post it on his blog. Although he never mentions names, it's quite clear he's referring to Rick and "Bigger Than Jesus":
"...the content of his message was so revolting, perverted and blasphemous that I found it incredulous that you [Moses Znaimer] would have given such recognition to something so hideous. For me, this is one of the most distasteful experiences I have ever had in my whole life... It is my hope that you come to see the magnitude of the severity of your decision for what occurred and that you will pursue God’s mercy in this matter because of what it will mean to you personally if you fail to do so."
Moses' reply eloquently stated that most people he had spoken to had found Weinland to be the blasphemer, as it must surely be blasphemy to claim to know the mind of God...
