Into the Ring

A WYRD Production
Created and Performed by Rick Miller and Dawson Nichols
Designed by Beth Kates

Produced by WYRD Productions and designed by Beth Kates, Miller and Nichols’ collaboration explores the Lord of the Rings phenomenon with excerpts from the book, live camera feeds, and video projections. The two actors create dozens of different characters who all share an obsession with J.R.R. Tolkien and his most famous creation.

The play revolves around two brothers who decide to make a documentary about J.R.R. Tolkien. One brother is a filmmaker and Tolkien admirer; the other a film producer more motivated by money than passion for his subject. As the footage is gathered, their conflict intensifies, and in the process, the play delves into some of the key themes of The Lord of the Rings, as well as the mystique of artistic creation.
